Flexible standards have an individual meaning to users and transform to strict standards using reaction masks (in order to form a new concept); thus a flexible meaning is created from a combination of other meanings. Flexible definitions can be thought of as a bridge between the rigid terminology of standardized categories and the flexible variety of everyday speech.
Flexible standards fulfill the need to translate common perceptions into a highly structured framework without trying to enforce a new understanding. Flexible definitions may mutate, depending on their use, meaning, appropriateness and interpretation. Over time these adjustments will lead to an increasingly greater consensus on their composition (also referred to as derivation). Any user can add or modify flexible standards to express his own definition of meaning (in contrast to strict standards which are not be editable by users).
Common examples for flexible standards include a mixed-use building, a distribution center, or a hotel building.
